Removing the legacy of war from South Lebanon
Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and landmine clearance specialist BACTEC International Limited (BACTEC) is playing a leading role in releasing South Lebanon from the grip of landmines and unexploded munitions. BACTEC currently has two major eod/mine clearance projects based in southern Lebanon.
The task to remove the legacy of war is daunting but achievable. During Israel’s incursion into Lebanon in July and August 2006, Israeli forces deployed ground-based and naval artillery, air-delivered, tank and infantry munitions. Some 2-3,000 items of ordnance were dropped per day in the first few weeks, culminating in 5-6,000 items per day in the last two weeks. It is estimated that up to one million unexploded cluster munitions fired from land-based systems are scattered across large areas of South Lebanon. Over 800 individual strikes have been identified for clearance. Thirty dead and 186 casualties (to the end of January) are testament to their lethality.
