Founded in 1991, BACTEC International Limited is the UK's foremost explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and land mine clearance company, providing highly specialised services worldwide, together with related training and advisory activities. The company provides risk mitigation services for overseas governments, nongovernment organisations, local authorities, MoD, the UN, EC and multinational companies for the oil, gas and construction industries.

BACTEC's impressive export performance - a fivefold increase in overseas earnings over the last three years, has been recognised with a 2008 Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, the first time it has been the recipient of this prestigious accolade. The company's position owes much to the vision of its founder, Guy Lucas MBE, an officer in the British Army from 1965 - 1990. During his military career he was trained as a combat engineer, specialist diver and EOD officer. He was involved in mine warfare, booby traps and jungle warfare in the Far East, before attending the Defence EOD school officers advanced EOD and IEDD courses. A three year tour in Northern Ireland followed.

Lucas commanded the RE EOD Squadron from 1980 to 1983, during which time he set up and ran the triservice EOD clearance operation to clear the Falklands after the conflict. This was followed by tasks in Hong Kong, Trinidad, America and Germany, gaining a great deal of hands on experience as an EOD operator, rendering safe a number of iron bombs and lifting mines. After leaving the forces he set up BACTEC International Limited and was project director for clearing the UK sector of Kuwait, involving the clearance of 140kms of minefields with the disposal of 500,000 mines and the destruction of 20,000 tonnes of ammunition.

He was project director of emergency response operations in Bosnia, followed by rapid response EOD and cluster munitions clearance teams in Kosovo and the QA of major mine clearance works in Zimbabwe. From 2001-2004 he was project director for the major mine clearance project in Lebanon.

In 1987 Guy Lucas was awarded the MBE for services to EOD and national security.
